welcome

Always a creative soul, growing up in Richmond Matt spent his youth studying, drawing, and sketching the architecture and landscapes of central and Tidewater Virginia. After studying art at the University of Virginia, he took a long artistic hiatus as he moved and worked throughout the South and Southwest. Completing graduate work at VCU in 2013 left him for searching for more creative endeavors which lead him back to drawing. A logical progression to oil painting quickly followed as the world of color beckoned him to explore, embrace, and express his values, observations, and silent commentary.

Drawn to objects and atmospheres of the American South and Southwest, his paintings and portraits record natural landscapes, native species, and the built environment in contemplative positioning, dramatic placement, and vivid color. Drifting between modern impressionism and realism, he is at heart a representational painter. His interests range from coastal themes, avian and floral portraiture, interior spaces, and occasional irreverence that beckons to be honored.
